I started work at TYA as a part time Sessional Youth Worker in October 2011 and became Project Manager in September 2014.
My background in catering and hospitality has proven very useful and I have found that cooking and breaking bread with our young people is a great way of breaking down barriers and getting to know them and what makes them tick.
I am mainly office based now but take any and every chance for a game of table tennis and a blether with our youth club members
Having grown up in Peebles and attended the youth club myself as a teenager I have had first-hand experience of the benefits that TYA has to offer. I started working here in January 2017 after studying sound engineering and throughout the last two years I have been involved in various music projects with the young people. We ran a string of band nights showcasing local young bands and musicians along with a team of young people organising, promoting and running the events with weekly music workshops feeding into these. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting my teeth into youth club life, I’ve met an amazing group of young people and I’m proud to be a part of such a great staff team.
I have been at TYA since 2015, when I began volunteering in Innerleithen. My areas of expertise include drugs, alcohol and sexual health but I have of course, as is essential at TYA the ability to turn my hand to a million things outside my comfort zone! My favourite things other than youth work are friends, music, cheese and laughter. I have had many and varied jobs these include but are not limited to medical biochemist, bar person, accountant, counsellor. Jack of all trades, some might say, but I think I have finally found my niche and my people at TYA!
